  • Overview

    The Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day production activities at the Portage production facility focusing on key metrics of safety, quality, delivery, cost and engagement.  This position manages six to eight production crew members, and one Shipping/Receiving Supervisor. 


    Expected Results:


    • Meet or exceed the plants safety, quality, delivery, and cost goals.
    • Increase employee engagement by creating a culture of ownership and accountability
    • Improve daily work processes through continuous improvement activities
    • Dependable/Stable operating crew through cross training and employee development
    • Ensure up to date documentation of SOP’s, training materials, and job expectations
    • Promote teamwork and communication with our technical and product development teams.


    • Hire and develop sufficient crew members to meet production needs.
    • Develop a culture that engages employees to work safely while driving continuous improvement and delivering day-to-day business objectives.

    • Resolve personnel performance issues utilizing company performance management practices
    • Develop full understanding of the Portage Plant processes and capabilities.  –
    • Deliver commercialized products that meet quality, delivery and cost targets by developing, monitoring and controlling production and quality standards, and identifying risks to meeting plant objectives and implementing counter measures.
    • Assist in the implementation of business process systems that enhance communications and production order status visibility
    • Participate on work teams with sales, R&D and our engineers to develop and transition projects in development to commercial production.
    • Effectively manages direct reports, including performance management (setting and modifying objectives, giving prompt corrective feedback as well as praise, coaching for improved or sustained performance, reviewing performance, conducting salary planning), career development (planning and holding regular discussions with employees about their personal growth and development, including career goals), and building open and trusting relationships that further high employee performance and engagement.


    Technical Skills/Experience/Background/Traits:


    • 8+ years of supervisory/leadership experience with increasing responsibly in ISO/cGMP or similar manufacturing environment.  Chemical industry preferred.
    • Solid experience in highly collaborate environments, both internally and externally. Prefer track record of development of successful partnerships with external customer and companies.
    • Experience leading and/or implementing process improvement initiatives utilizing Six-Sigma and Lean Manufacturing methodologies
    • Strong safety and quality mindset
    • Strong data analysis skills and ability to make data driven decisions to maintain critical production and quality parameters
    • Ability to take on challenging issues and implement permanent solutions
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Proven ability to maintain high standards aligned with corporate values. Ability to hold people accountable and initiate crucial conversations.
    • Information systems or ERP System experience a plus
    • Business knowledge of cost/benefit analysis and strategic planning
    • Leader who can develop, energize and empower others


    Educational Preferences/Requirements: 


    • BS in Industrial Management or Operations Management
    • BS in Chemical Engineering, or related discipline considered
    • Six-Sigma or Lean experience preferred
